Crosswords and rebuses in English. Rebus of English words. Municipal educational institution

Learners tend to view vocabulary memorization as boring, monotonous, and time consuming. This encourages creative teachers to use non-traditional ways of working. One of them is the use of puzzles at the stage of consolidation of previously studied lexical units. It is customary to call a rebus an image of a word or sentence (encoding words, phrases) using a combination of drawings (pictures), letters, numbers, signs.

Usually, nouns in the nominative case are encrypted in rebuses, but you can include words of any part of speech - numerals, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, prepositions (see examples in the Appendix).

The most common principles of word coding are the following:

1. Word + word (object + object): basket + ball, arm + chair, bed + room, book + shelf.

2. Subject + word part or word part + subject: t + hat = that, o + pen = open, y + ear = year.

Figure 7 Figure 8 Figure 9

3. Letters are excluded from the name of the depicted object using comma (s) - if the comma is to the left of the figure, then the first letter (or several letters, if 2-3 commas) must be excluded in the word, if to the right of the figure, then the last one (s )), or other letters are added to replace the crossed out ones: sheep '' = she, 'cup = up,' house '' + t = out, y + 'car + d = yard, w +' nine '+ ten' + r = winter.

4. Letters (letter combinations, objects), are depicted one on top of the other (above it, below it), one in the other, next to each other (one letter is "leaning" against the other or they seem to be holding hands), any letter "Goes" towards the other (or others), then when reading, respectively, the prepositions 'on', 'under', 'up', 'in', 'at', 'with', 'to' are added: e. g. k-in-d = kind, M-on-day = Monday, to-w-n = town, sk-at-e = skate, am-on-g = among, s-up-per = supper.

5. Numbers are written above the figure (or next to the image), then the letters are read in the order indicated by the numbers: eat (3,1,2) = tea, ear (2,3,1) = are, Kate (3, 2,1,4) = take, net (3,2,1) = ten.

6. The strikethrough letter is excluded when decoding the word or replaced by another: monkey = money, coat = cat, coast = coat, bag (a = i) = big, hat (t = m) = ham, lake (l = m) = make.

Sometimes students try to compose their own puzzles (see Appendix). A quantitative analysis shows that out of 120 presented puzzles, the largest group is made up of nouns (63), followed by verbs (20), adjectives and adverbs (16), prepositions (9), numerals (6), pronouns (6).

The technique of using puzzles revives the work of students in an English lesson, increases their efficiency and allows them to intensify the educational process, fosters students' interest in the subject and has a positive effect on the emotional state of schoolchildren. Solving ready-made puzzles and composing their own, students develop ingenuity, imagination, intuition, strengthen memory, firmly assimilating the lexical material being studied. This is one of the techniques of pedagogical skill, which allows to activate the desire of children to learn.

Introduction

In literacy classes, Russian language lessons and in entertainment magazines, word games are often found - puzzles. Rebus is interesting and useful to solve. They develop imaginative thinking, logic, help to memorize the spelling of dictionary (unverifiable) words of the Russian language. In English lessons, you also need to memorize words. I would like this lesson to become more interesting and easier.

The purpose our job is to compose puzzles of English words used in elementary school.
We supplied the following tasks:

· Find out the history of puzzles;

· Find out from which parts you can make puzzles, and what rules for their compilation exist;

· Pick up English words and make puzzles for them, using various elements and rules of composition;

· Prepare a visual aid in the form of puzzles of English words for elementary school.

To accomplish the set tasks, we used the following research methods:

· Study of articles;

· Analysis and comparison of words;

We were able to use most of the techniques we learned (see Appendix), but we could not use the rule of relative position of elements, since in English most nouns are used with the article (For example: on the table); we also failed to compose a rebus with a repeating element. We included all the puzzles we had made in the presentation "Rebus of English Words" and made a collection in printed version.

Conclusion

The goal of our work was achieved: we managed to compose puzzles of English words, using the rules for composing puzzles of Russian words.

The hypothesis was partially confirmed: we were able to apply most of the techniques in practice, but we could not apply all the techniques we knew.

The work of making puzzles is no less exciting and rewarding activity than solving them.

We hope that the result of our work - the collection "Rebus of English Words" will be useful and interesting for children who are learning English.

A rebus - is a device that uses pictures

to represent words or parts of words.

Rebus is a type of puzzle, in the image of which a word is encrypted.

Even in ancient times, rebuses were used to convey the name of cities

on Greek and Roman coins, or to denote family names

in medieval heraldry, as well as contributing to the perception of symbols in architecture.

Unlike a simple riddle, where the basis goes to a verbal description,

the rebus also develops logical figurative thinking,

teaches to perceive a graphic image outside the box,

and also trains visual memory and spelling.

HOW TO SOLVE:

RULES FOR FINDING REBUS:

On the site:

http://rebus1.com/en/index.php?item=solve - you will find rules for how to solve puzzles.

The commas in front of the picture indicate how many letters you need to remove at the beginning of the hidden word,

the commas at the end of the figure indicate how many letters should be removed from the end of the word.

If a letter is crossed out, it must be removed from the word,

if there is an equal sign, then one letter needs to be replaced with another.

A rebus is an image of a word or sentence using a combination of numbers, letters, signs, pictures, etc.

1. Code "word + word", "object + object" (arm-chair)

2. If a comma is given to the left of the figure or at the top, it means the first letter is excluded from the word.

If to the right of the picture or below, then the last one. (Fox-ox, bear-ear)

If there are 2 commas, we exclude 2 letters, respectively.

3. If 2 objects (letters) are drawn one in the other, then when decoding the word

add the preposition in: w-in-d, f-in-e.

4. Often items are encrypted in this way:

subject + part of a word and vice versa - part of a word + subject (hat-e, man-y)

5. If there is a letter above the picture, it must be included in the word so that

to get another word: coat-coast, pot-plot

6. If an object is drawn, and a strikethrough letter is written next to it,

then we exclude this letter when decoding the word.

If another letter is written above the crossed out letter, then you need to replace the crossed out letter with it.

Children learning English can get quite bored in lessons where there are no game elements. And if there is no interest in classes, then you should not expect good results. The teacher must be able to motivate his students, be it a school or one-to-one tutoring. Therefore, it is important in the learning process to include all kinds of crosswords, riddles, charades, puzzles and rebuses in English for children.

One of the most common ways to captivate a child with lessons is rebuses (rebus). They are great for repeating and reinforcing previously learned material, new vocabulary, spelling rules. Their essence lies in the fact that with the help of pictures, special, previously agreed, sign designations, a word is encoded, and sometimes whole sentences.

The most commonly used words for encryption are nouns in the nominative form. But if you wish, you can think of other parts of speech: verbs, adverbs, adjectives.

It is noteworthy that for Russian-speaking children, puzzles are required that are completely different from those used for little Englishmen. Everything is explained by the fact that if our puzzles are mostly built on clear rules, then in England the boundaries are somewhat blurred, the emphasis is on the similar pronunciation of various syllables.

Below you will find English puzzles in pictures with answers. Here are the conventions:

1.F = T, this means that the letter in the pictured word is replaced by another.

For example: if the picture shows a cat and stands C = H, then instead of cat, we get hat.

2. "," - one such sign removes one letter, respectively, if there is ",", then we exclude two letters. From which edge of the word we remove depends on whether there are commas at the beginning or at the end of the word.

3. A picture with numbers 1.5 or another combination. It means that from the depicted word we take only those letters that are in the indicated positions, that is, the first and fifth.

For example: A giraffe is depicted, and next to the picture there are numbers 2, 6, which means that for decoding we will take only i, f.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated here. It only takes a little practice. Such tasks can be given to the child as homework, instead of boring memorization. They will especially interest primary school students.
