Features of fluorescent paint and its scope. Types and possibilities of fluorescent inks

Fluorescent paint for walls is a very specific type of paint and varnish materials. He reacts in a special way to the directional light.

In the dark, a similar composition glows 2/3 times brighter than during the day.

Characteristics of fluorescent coatings

A little bit about what fluorescent materials are. A special property of these paints is that they convert the ultraviolet absorbed by them, and then emit it in the visible part of the spectrum.

Material Features

  1. Ordinary paints reflect, as much as possible, up to 85% of the light falling on them.. In fluorescent analogues, this ability is 2/3 times higher. Such compounds can glow in the invisible rays of the spectrum.
  2. Glowing pigments are not, in the traditional sense. These are rather large (10/75 microns) grains of polymers that are treated in volume with special coloring substances.
  3. As a fluorescent dye manufacturers use special substances - "phosphors". As a rule, these are derivatives of aminonaphthalimide or rhodamines.
  4. You can buy fluorescent compositions of violet, white, blue, brown, pink, red, blue, green, yellow and other colors.
  5. There are invisible and visible luminous coatings.. Transparent fluorescent paint in the afternoon is almost invisible. The composition is manifested only when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Visible coatings look like regular analogs during the day. At night, the UV rays increase their luminescence.

Note!
Do not confuse fluorescent and fluorescent paints.
The first variety can accumulate light energy and independently release it in complete darkness.
The second only highly efficiently reflects the light directed at it.

Purpose of paints

There are many types of luminous coatings designed for different bases.

  1. Paints for metal. Such aerosol products are used to paint airbrushing on car bodies, paint discs. Can be used in the interior or exterior of buildings, the design of road signs, decorative elements, art objects.
  2. Analogs for fabrics. Popular with artists, clothing manufacturers and promotional textiles.
  3. Compositions for glossy bases and glass. With their help, you can create your own images on the dishes, stained glass, to produce original ceramic tiles.
  4. Aqueous emulsions and dispersions are in demand in body art and decorative painting of living plants.
  5.   use for decorating fences, arbors, gates, doors, window frames, etc.
  6. Coatings for stone-like surfaces are designed to create luminous effects on concrete, plaster, artificial and natural stone, facing brick.
  7. Compositions for plastic coatings, products and objects. Can be applied on polypropylene, polystyrene, PVC, polycarbonate.

Coating composition

  1. One of the most popular is fluorescent acrylic paint. It consists of a luminous pigment and a binder base (acrylic dispersion or emulsion) in an aqueous medium. It can be used for almost all types of foundations.

Note!
Due to the fact that the material does not contain aggressive chemical substances and solvents, it can be used not only in construction.
These are the colors used in body art.

  1. Luminous paints for exterior work are often made on the basis of polyurethane resins having high adhesion. They are diluted with organic solvents. Compounds are applicable to all mineral substrates - stone, brick, concrete, plaster.

During the day, the surface painted with such a composition has a rich, attractive color. At night, the coating brightly glows in the rays of ultraviolet illumination.

Technological properties and paint application

Some technical characteristics of the described compositions:

  • dry residue - 50/55% (by weight);
  • specific gravity (density) - 1.09 / 1.12 kg per liter;
  • viscosity level according to DIN-4 (at + 20 °) - 20/40 seconds;
  • consumption - 20/100 g / m², depending on the base;
  • hazard category - 4 (safe).

The instruction allows the application of formulations, swab, pouring, dipping or spraying.

In the latter case, you can use paint in cans or use the spray gun.

  1. The substrate must be clean and dry. Remove dust and dirt from the surface can be mechanically, using a sponge moistened with water.
  2. Before using the fluorescent composition must be well mixed to a state of complete homogeneity.
  3. The coating should be applied in 2, in some cases - in 3 layers.
  4. The drying period of each layer is 3 / 3.5 hours, with a room temperature of +20 degrees.

Fluorescent coatings with respect to ordinary analogues have several features.

  • Luminous paints are thermally unstable. Their decomposition temperature is +150/250 degrees.
  • Note!
    It is not recommended to tint fluorescent materials by yourself. they are unstable.
    Should be purchased.

    Conclusion

    Colorless fluorescent paint, like visible, can be used to create light effects on all types of bases. In addition, with its help you can decorate the interior, art, and even engage in body art. The video in this article will give you a lot of additional information on its topic.

    Often you can see in the design of the premises with a glow effect. Beautiful and bright patterns on the walls or ceiling attract attention. This is explained by the fact that fluorescent dye is used for dyeing.

    The composition of the fluorescent dye is enriched with luminous ingredients, which provide its properties. Both visible fluorescent pigments and hidden, that is, invisible in the afternoon colors can be found on sale.

    Features glowing palettes

    Fluorescent paint acquires its glow properties from the addition of a special pigment, which is manifested in the ultraviolet. This pigment is a polymer that is coated with a special composition - fluorophore. It is not toxic, so these paints can be safely used for interior decoration.

    You should know that fluorescent and fluorescent paint - are two different things. Fluorescent pigments only reflect the rays, and the luminescent accumulates in itself energy, and then gives it in the dark.

    Pigments create a more colorful effect in the dark, therefore their field of application is usually aimed at night decor. In the dark, the composition glows several times stronger than during the day. Therefore, to enhance the effect in the daytime use visible fluorescent dyes. Paint for the walls is different: pink, blue, gold and so on. Invisible paint is absolutely invisible during the daytime, it begins to fluoresce only in the dark.

    High-quality, and therefore in demand are invisible fluorescent paints firms KUDO and BOSNY.

    In the video: fluorescent and fluorescent fluorescent paint.

    Application area

    Fluorescent paint is used for the design of the interior decoration, as well as the facade. With its help, paintings, three-dimensional compositions and other design things that can be done without attracting craftsmen are created.

    If there is even the slightest ability to create, then you can do the decoration with your own hands. There are also fluorescent watercolors, the easiest way to perform dyeing in cans. Most popular are pigments in cans KUDO or BOSNY.

    Very often the painting is used to decorate public spaces: restaurants, clubs and other places of entertainment. It is in such places that fluorescent colors create a luminous atmosphere. Especially original look red fluorescent paint.

    Acrylic glowing pigments are used for Body Art. Paint that is used for the body is absolutely safe, as it is made on a water-dispersion basis.

    Types of luminous paint

    Often there is a consumer question - what is luminous paint and what is it like? Fluorescent paint is available in several types, depending on the substrate used for its manufacture:

    •   Used for the implementation of design solutions indoors. It adds pigment particles that glow when exposed to sunlight. They have different colors. You can achieve any other color by mixing the color scheme yourself. Acrylic pigments are very good paint materials such as drywall, wood, plaster. Painting metal or plastic is not recommended.

    • Acrylic facade pigments.  They are characterized by a high degree of resistance to mechanical and atmospheric influences. They do not abrade over time, have a water-repellent effect. That is why such a decorative coating can be washed without fear of using detergents and cleaning products. But at the same time, the paint is breathable, the walls can breathe. She covered with concrete, stone, brick walls. It can also be used to paint metal, plastic and wood surfaces. This type of material can be used outside and in rooms with high humidity. For example, for registration of the luminous effect in the bathroom.

    • Alkyd spray UV paint.  It is universal. The advantages of such enamels are their resistance to various factors and quick drying. Experts recommend to buy paints already proven manufacturers, such as KUDO or BOSNY. It is the pigments of these companies that provide high quality fluorescent effects. In addition, they can paint both wood and plaster, as well as plastic and glass.

    Application Instructions

    The method of applying fluorescent watercolors depends on the state of the surface. It can be embossed or even, rough or smooth. Tools that can be used: a paint brush or paint roller, foam tampons or spray guns for applying paint. For the convenience of the process of painting can be purchased holders for foam rubber. Watercolor can be splashed on the wall, and small objects dipped in paint.

    You can also paint the wall with fluorescent paint from a can. These are manufactured by KUDO or BOSNY.

    Directly applying enamel perform according to the following rules:

    • Pre-surface thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt. Wash with soap or soda. We focus on the fact that the surface should then be dried well.
    • Before you apply the enamel, it is well stirred. If a dispersive emulsion is used, 10% of water is added to it. If staining is done from a can, then it is shaken well for about 2 minutes.
    • It is necessary to perform staining at a temperature not lower than 5 0 C.
    • Fluorescent paint is applied in several layers. If a brush or roller is used, the first layer should be applied in the direction of it, and each subsequent one in its perpendicular direction. Enamel spray cans applied at a distance of 25-30 cm from the painted surface.
    • Do not forget to let each layer dry for about 3-4 hours before applying the next.
    • The last layer is applied to several previous ones, which means that it is necessary to give more time for drying, about a day.

    Tip! To facilitate the drawing of your own hands, you can use stencils or ready-made stamps. More complex compositions must first be applied to the wall with a pencil, and only then painted.

    Making glowing paint do it yourself

    Glowing palette can be done independently. To achieve the light effect, only a couple of components are required:

    • Acrylic based lacquering compound. Get it better in the bank, in a can not fit.
    • Fluorescent powder paint. Pure fluorophore is quite expensive, so it is best to purchase a polymer pigment, already prepared for the manufacture of the coloring matter. It is sold in special stores.

    To obtain the paint you need to combine the two components and mix very thoroughly. Do not forget to periodically mix the composition and during staining. Experts recommend to buy immediately the pigment of the desired shade. Additional tinting reduces the effect of glow in the dark.

    Pigment fluorescent formulations are quite expensive. Despite the prices of such branded enamels as KUDO or BOSNY, you can be confident in their quality. In any case, before deciding to create such a design decision, we thoroughly think over its justification.

    The use of fluorescent paints (1 video)

    Modern fluorescent paint is a dispersion composition that glows in the dark. The main active substance of the agent is fluorescent, which has the ability to emit light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the lamp. Such coloring material can be not only purchased at a specialty store, but also made with your own hands, even at home.

      Fluorescent paint emits light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation

    A variety of fluorescent dyes

    Today, fluorescent paint is represented by such compositions:

    • acrylic enamel for decorative works in the interior;
    • acrylic enamel for facade work;
    • universal spray paint urethane-alkyd, which is contained in cartridges.

    Acrylic enamel for decoration in the interior can be applied to any type of coating, for example, wood, paper, drywall, stone, and so on. However, this material is not well suited for coating metal and plastic surfaces. The tool consists of an acrylic base and a fluorescent pigment. It is the pigment that determines the nature of the color of the coating. To obtain certain shades can be mixed with each other compositions of different colors. All this can be done by hand at home.

    Fluorescent acrylic enamel for exterior and facade work is resistant to adverse atmospheric influences. It has the effect of liquid repelling and resistance to abrasion. Another important feature is its resistance to cleaning and disinfecting agents. Therefore, the coating, painted with such a composition, perfectly cleaned.

    Painting on front walls often requires dilution of the composition with water. The composition is easily applied to concrete or galvanized coating, mineral plaster, plastic, wood and cement slabs. Means differs in absence of an unpleasant smell. In addition, it does not complicate the diffusion of the painted surface.

      To make it elegant, some elements of the facade can be painted with fluorescent acrylic enamel.

    Universal aerosol urethane-alkyd paint can be used to paint surfaces both outdoors and in the interior. It is usually produced in cans and when applied forms a coating resistant to any adverse effects. The universality of such a composition is that it can paint almost any type of surface, for example, glass, furniture, walls and plastic.

    Application

    Fluorescent enamel is used mainly for finishing surfaces in the interior and for decorating the facade. With the help of a luminous paint coating of a certain color, you can create real art compositions, three-dimensional paintings or optical images. Moreover, all this you can do with your own hands at home. The most common aerosol luminous enamel in cans received in the interior of restaurants, nightclubs and other places of entertainment. Here the material glowing in the dark creates the effects necessary for a particular atmosphere. This means that with its help you can make unique interior details with your own hands, which will be visible in the dark.

    It is worth noting that the fluorescent dye can be colorless or visible. The colorless version is practically invisible in daylight and under the influence of the light of an ordinary lamp. Such a coloring agent begins to emit light only in the dark under the influence of an ultraviolet lamp.  As for the visible variant, in daylight it looks like a normal colorful pattern. That is, you can make a beautiful and original drawing on any surface that glows when ultraviolet rays hit it.

    Rules for working with fluorescent paint

      Prepare the surface well before applying the paint.

    Before applying this composition it is necessary to prepare the coating for painting. At this stage, the surface should be cleaned from dirt and dust. To this end, the walls are washed with a special powder, soap or soda solution. After that, all cleaning products are washed with water. Walls covered with chalk or lime must be thoroughly cleaned. Next, leave the surface to dry completely. Dry and clean coating can be considered as prepared for the application of paint.

    For dyeing with fluorescent paint, use the following tools:

    • roller or spray;
    • brush;
    • paint sprayer;
    • cuvette.

    For painting large areas, a spray or roller would be better. At the same time, it is desirable to paint small parts with a brush.

    Coloring is made at ambient temperature not less than +5 degrees. Before applying the fluorescent paint should be well mixed and diluted slightly with water, but not more than up to 10% dilution. The exception is spray paint in cans, which is already produced ready to use.

    To create a picture that will later be painted with paint, you should use a stencil or pencil. Next, apply the painting composition itself in two layers. It is necessary to wait until the first layer dries and then apply the second. The time of complete drying of the paint on a fluorescent basis is about one day.

    Thus, the paint on a fluorescent base is a universal coloring agent that glows when exposed to ultraviolet rays. It is used to create decorative elements in the interior and exterior.

    Making luminous farbami began to gain popularity. Many interior designers, contemporary artists and lovers of everything unusual are increasingly using this material in their works. However, for the rest, it is not clear what is the fluorescent dye, what it is, what is the difference between it and luminescent paint and why it begins to phosphoresce in the dark.

    What is fluorescent paint

    Fluorescent or phosphor paints are materials that, under the influence of ordinary or ultraviolet light, make an image voluminous and colorful. The basis of such a coating, as a rule, includes several types of pigment - light accumulative and reflective. To hold the pigment on the surface of the wall or fabric helps a transparent adhesive base: glue, silicone, varnish, water glass.

    What is the difference between fluorescent paint and fluorescent paint?

    Self-luminous or luminescent paint is a material that, by absorbing light energy, emits a glow in total darkness. The main difference between fluorescent and fluorescent paint is that the former can shine without any light sources, but only for 5-8 hours. Phosphor paint is mainly used for drawing road or informative signs, signs or some not very significant elements of the picture.

    How to choose a fluorescent paint

    Buy a fluorescent paint - not a problem, the main thing - in a huge variety of products not to get lost and make the right choice. To do this, during the purchase you should pay attention to the following characteristics:

    1. Pigmentation For saturated luminescence, some types of LED enamel must be applied in several layers, especially this drawback is inherent in stamp dyes.
    2. Resistance to temperature extremes. For outdoor work on concrete, glass, metal or graffiti, it is better to choose powder phosphorescent materials. Ordinary photoluminescent dyes are ideal for printing on clothes.
    3. Uniformity. Open the can and carefully look at the paint composition. If it contains lumps, dust or dirt, it is better to abandon the purchase.
    4. Quick drying For any finishing work, it is important that the coating dries faster.

    Video: drawings with fluorescent colors

    Fluorescent paint - dispersion composition, which is able to glow under the influence of ultraviolet rays. The most spectacularly painted elements look in the dark. Use luminous compositions for painting different surfaces, applying patterns on interior and exterior items, and even for body art. Now on sale there are colorless and "visible" fluorescent paints of various colors. In addition, this unusual material can be made by hand, saving on the purchase.

    What is fluorescent dye and how does it “work”?

    This coloring composition received its properties from a special pigment that can fluoresce when UV radiation is exposed to it. It absorbs ultraviolet light, transforms it and gives up the rays of the visible part of the spectrum. This pigment is a polymer dispersion in which the smallest particles of polymer are coated with a fluorescent substance - the fluorophore. Most often rhodamines and derivatives of aminonaphthalimide act as a fluorophore. They are non-toxic and completely safe when used indoors.

    On a note! Fluorescent and fluorescent paints are different materials. Fluorescent coatings only reflect the rays of light directed at them, while fluorescent coatings can absorb light energy during the day and give it away later, glowing even in complete darkness.

      Fluorescent paint shows its properties when exposed to UV rays

    Interestingly, fluorescent dyes glow in the daytime, but in the dark the glow becomes 2–3 times brighter. Therefore, they are used mainly for "night" decor and markings. And so that the painted surfaces look beautiful even in the daytime, you can use painted fluorescent paints. They may have white, blue, blue, green, brown, red, orange and other colors. Transparent formulations are almost invisible by day.

    Where are used fluorescent paint

    The material is used for decoration of internal and external surfaces of buildings. It is also easy to decorate any object with the help of glowing enamel, creating a unique decoration for your home or a gift to a friend. Having an artistic talent, you can paint a unique picture with fluorescent paint that will decorate the inner wall or facade. Most often, such solutions are used in the decoration of nightlife - clubs, restaurants, etc.

      Fluorescent paintings can be the "highlight" of the interior

    At the same time, you can “highlight” almost anything. Different types of fluorescent coatings are suitable for coloring:

    • metal (car bodies and disks, road signs, decorative and artistic objects);
    • fabrics (clothing, promotional items and textile souvenirs);
    • glass and ceramics (tableware, stained glass, ceramic tiles);
    • human body (body art) and living plants;
    • wood (fences, arbors, windows, doors);
    • stone and concrete (walls, stairs, walkways, facades);
    • plastic (polypropylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate and PVC products).

    Attention! Before you make a glowing pattern on any surface, you need to make sure that the chosen paint is suitable for it. For example, only water-based safe acrylic dispersions can be used for body art.

      For body art use safe water-based formulations.

    Characteristics of fluorescent coatings

    In addition to the unusual ability to glow, fluorescent paint has other features. The most important of them are:

    • Low light resistance. Fluorescent dyes quickly fade under the influence of light (especially when used outdoors). To protect the pigments from burnout, a special modifier that absorbs UV rays is introduced into the dispersion. Or you can simply finish the finished coating with a transparent varnish on top. But in both cases, the brightness of the pattern decreases.

    On a note! Particularly unstable fluorescent paint becomes after self-tinting. Therefore, if the durability of the coating is very important, it is better to purchase ready-made colored material.

      Each type of fluorescent coatings has its own characteristics and characteristics.

    • Grain. Since the grains of the pigment are rather large, they do not allow to obtain a thin glossy coating. To solve this problem, paint is applied in two layers or varnished.
    • Thermal instability. Fluorescent coatings begin to decompose at + 150 ... 250 ° С. At the same time they lose their ability to glow.

    Types and purpose of colors with a luminous effect

    Today on the market there are several groups of fluorescent paints of different composition:

    1. Acrylic enamels for interior work. Consist of acrylic base and glowing pigments of different colors. Such paints can be mixed to achieve the desired shade with their own hands. Acrylic dispersions are excellently applied to drywall, plaster and wood, but are poorly suited for dyeing metal and plastic.
    2. Acrylic enamels for facade work. They have increased resistance to weathering, as well as resistance to abrasion and water-repellent properties. Ready-made coatings are perfectly washed even with the use of cleaning and disinfecting agents, but at the same time they themselves do not interfere with the walls “breathing”. Paints of this type are applied to concrete, stone, brick, galvanized metal, plastic, wood.
    3. Universal aerosol urethane-alkyd paints in cans. Such materials can be used for both internal and external works. They provide a durable, resistant to adverse conditions coating on glass, wood, plaster and plastic.

    Rules and technology of applying fluorescent paints

    Depending on the relief and the size of the painted surface, a brush, roller, tampon, spray gun are used to apply fluorescent paint. The emulsion can also be simply poured into the desired area, and if the item to be painted is small, dip it in a jar. Fluorescent spray paints are sprayed directly from the can.

    In any case, when applying the material adhere to these recommendations:

    • They clean the substrate for painting from dust and dirt, for example, washed with soap and water or soda, and then dry well.
    • Stir the paint thoroughly before use. The water-based emulsion should be slightly diluted (to do this, add up to 10% of water). Before spraying, the aerosol can is shaken for about two minutes.

      Before starting work, fluorescent paint must be mixed.

    • Work at a temperature from +5 ° C.
    • Apply the material in two to three thin layers. To obtain an even coating, brush and roller move first in one direction, and then perpendicular. Spray paint is sprayed with smooth movements from a distance of 30 cm.

      On a note! To create your own glowing pattern, it is convenient to use stencils or stamps. If you need a more complex picture, it is first drawn with a pencil, and only then painted.

    • Each layer is allowed to dry for 3–3.5 hours (at a temperature of about 20 ° C).
    • After applying the last layer leave the painted surface until completely dry (it will take about 24 hours).

    Self-manufacturing fluorescent paint

    Luminous enamel can be made with your own hands. For this you need two components:

    1. Transparent acrylic lacquer (required in the bank, the aerosol will not work).
    2. Fluorescent powder. Not a “pure” fluorophore, which is very expensive, but a ready-made polymer-based pigment. It can be purchased in specialized stores and the Internet.

      Components for self-fluorescent paint preparation

    To obtain the coloring composition, the pigment is poured into an acrylic base and mixed thoroughly. During dyeing, the emulsion also needs to be stirred frequently.

    It is better to pick up the fluorescent powder of the desired color right away than to take a transparent luminous pigment and additionally tint it. Tinting worsens glow.

    Before you make a glowing material at home, you should make sure that it is really necessary. The fact is that the fluorescent pigment is quite expensive, and it is profitable to buy it only for the preparation of a large amount of the same color emulsion.

      Fluorescent powder is a rather expensive material, so in most cases it is more profitable to purchase ready-made paint.

    If the fluorescent paint is needed in a small amount, but in different colors, it is better to buy it in finished form. The aerosol form is especially good for this purpose - even if the material is not used all at once, it will perfectly remain in the spray can until the next moment of inspiration. And then at any time it will be possible to implement a new idea to create a luminous object or pattern.
