Unregardless of the situation, the helicopters, under the supervision of Colonel Maidanov, withdrew their helicopters from the shelling and saved the landing and helicopters. A small piece of fire broke through the cockpit of the commander's Mi-8. The wound turned out to be fatal.

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated 10 December 2000, Mikola Sainovich Maidanov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
